STAGE SET FOR ANOTHER OVERRIDE ATTEMPT ON CONCEALED CARRY

Concealed carry legislation faces a deja vu scenario in the state Assembly.

Governor Jim Doyle has set up the state up for a replay of events two years ago, when the Assembly failed by one vote to override his veto of similar concealed carry legislation. The state Senate will have the first go at an override vote, and it appears concealed carry backers there have the needed two thirds margin. In the Assembly, concealed carry author, Republican Steve Gunderson, looks for support from Democrats John Steinbrink and Terry Van Akkeren.

That original Assembly vote included six Democrats but was two shy of the needed two thirds for an override. One Republican was absent, and one vacant seat has since been filled by a Republican, so Gunderson has reason for optimism. But Assembly Minority Leader, Democrat Jim Kreuser, is confident the veto will be sustained.
