LEAD BLAMED ON RESIDENTIAL PLUMBING, NOT MARSHFIELD WATER SUPPLY

Elevated lead levels reported in Marshfield’s drinking water are being blamed on residential plumbing, not the water supply. Marshfield Utilities has conducted drinking water tests since 1992, but hadn’t found elevated lead levels until recently. While performing tests at 30 houses, the utility discovered extremely elevated lead levels in at least two homes, a few others had elevated tests as well. A utility spokesperson tells the Marshfield News Herald there is no lead in the water as it exits the city’s pipes, but the water becomes tainted when running through lead and copper pipes in homes. They advise people with older lead pipes to run their water a minute before using it.
