YOUTH CONCUSSION BILL GETS BACKING
Monday, February 6th, 2012 -- 10:59 am
Posted by Larry Hoeser, Sports Director

The National Football League, the Green Bay Packers and a host of medical groups plan to make a public push in the next few weeks to gain final legislative approval for a youth concussion bill.

The bill, which passed easily in the Assembly last year, has been stalled in the Senate. The bill directs the state Department of Public Instruction, in conjunction with the WIAA, to develop guidelines and other information to educate coaches and athletes and their parents about the risk of concussion and head injury in youth athletic activities.

The most controversial measure would require that a person who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a youth athletic activity be removed from the activity immediately. That person would not be able to return to the field of play until they have been evaulated by a trained health-care provider. The health-care provider would have to provide written clearance in order for the athlete to return to play.
