After School Hang-Out Set to Open in Neillsville

An area woman is leading an effort to provide kids with a safe place to go after school.

The Neillsville Area Community Center will open on February 1 in the basement beneath the Bookkeeping Plus building, on the 400 block of Hewett Street.

Amanda Muma and her friend, Jennifer Ball, started working on the idea over the summer. They’re both social workers and see a real need for structure after school.

"That's really the goal," explains Muma, "is getting the kids into more of a safe environment, supervised. That's an important thing."

The center won’t turn kids away, but will be geared toward Middle and High School students.

The pair spent the summer working on their business plan and paperwork. They also got the ball rolling on fundraising and giving the rooms a major face-lift.

"We've got three separate areas: a homework room, an arts and crafts room and a game room that has a pool table, Foosball table and various other arcade games," she says. "It's amazing."

The center will be open weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. They are currently looking for adult volunteers to assist in supervising youth and help with homework. If anybody is interested, they can contact Amanda at 715-216-0589, look for them on Facebook or e-mail them at neillsvilleareacommunitycenter@gmail.com.
