Dream of White Christmas Melting Away

It doesn’t look like your dreams of a “White Christmas” will come true this year.

Here in Neillsville, there is no snow on the ground at all. That’s par for the course throughout most of Minnesota and Wisconsin, according to Dan Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in La Crosse.

And the forecast doesn’t look promising.

"We have several little weak systems that are coming through the area," Jones says, "but the chances of measurable snow are very, very slim."

In order for us to have an official "white" Christmas, we need an inch of snow on the ground or falling on Christmas day.

While it doesn’t look good, Jones says he’s still holding out some hope.

"It's still nine days away. There's always that possibility that we could get a nice, little system that could give us a widespread one or two inches of snow," he encourages.

Our last “brown” Christmas came during the very mild December of 2006. Statistically, we can expect “white” Christmases eight out of every ten years.
