Busy Time of the Year For Letter Carriers

Neillsville, Wis. (CWB News) - The Holiday Season means local letter carriers are getting a workout.

Neillsville Postmaster Lisa Schilling says they’ve already seen a big up-tick in shipping volume, in part due to increased on-line purchases.

"A lot of peoples' on-line packages are coming through us and being delivered through us," she says, "We can already tell the increase on that."

Schilling expects December 19th will be the heaviest mailing day of the year. "I would have to say next week will be a very heavy mailing week," she adds.

Their “flat rate” boxes, starting at just $5.20, have revolutionized how people send gifts through the mail.

"Everybody uses them. They're so great," she boasts. "You already know what your postage is. You can go up to 70 lbs. in them. They're perfect for cheese and sausage."

DEALING WITH WINTER WEATHER

Now that we have some snow on the ground, Schilling reminds customers to keep their sidewalks and driveways clear of ice and snow. Rural customers need to make sure the mail carrier can actually reach the mailbox.

"A lot of people just shovel right in front of the mailbox, but that doesn't always help that much. You've got to get before the box and after the box, if you're on a rural route," Schilling encourages.

Schilling says letter carriers won’t deliver if they can’t get to your box. They’ll try to leave a note explaining your mail is on a snow-hold and you should call the Post Office for more information.
