The state Department of Natural Resources says the number of deer harvested during the recently concluded gun season was up about 3.6% this year.

According to a preliminary survey (.pdf) of about 600 registration stations across the state, an estimated 226,260 deer were killed during the nine-day gun hunting season. 218,144 deer were killed in 2010.

The preliminary tally shows hunters harvested almost 103,000 bucks and over 123,000 antlerless deer.

Here in Clark County, hunters bagged 6,662 deer; that’s down 14 from last year. Hunters here shot 12% fewer bucks and 9% more antlerless deer this year.

Only Waupaca County and Marathon County had bigger harvests. Marathon County’s tally jumped a whopping 28% thanks to a 72% increase in antlerless deer taken.

While the gun hunt is done for the year, muzzle loader and archery seasons continue into December. Harvest numbers from this fall will be used to make population estimates, which help set the deer hunting season structure for 2012.
