Farm Groups Oppose Proposed Labor Rules

Several farm groups have come out strongly opposed to proposed labor regulations that would limit the ability of minors to work on farms.

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation and the Wisconsin FFA Foundation blasted the regulations that would change existing 'hazardous occupation' categories to include operating tractors or other power-driven equipment such as lawn mowers or stationary equipment such as hoists. The rules would also prohibit individuals under age 16 from performing certain tasks unless they are working solely under the control of their parent or guardian.

The Department of Labor says the changes are being made because of concerns related to safety as well as to more closely align regulations for agriculture with non-agriculture occupations.

The Department is taking public comments through December 1.
