An area state lawmaker wants farmers compensated if their livestock falls pray to cougars.

A bill by Rep. Amy Sue Vruwink (D-Milladore) has moved through committee. It would add mountain lions to the state's wildlife depredation program, which would authorize payments to affected producers.

Cougar sightings have become more common around central Wisconsin, and Vruwink says the bill is a proactive measure.

Currently, farmers are eligible for payments if damage is caused by deer, bear, geese, sand hill cranes or wolves.

The bill now goes before the entire Assembly for a floor vote.
