"MEGA FARM" MOVING FORWARD
Friday, November 4th, 2011 -- 12:21 pm Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director
A proposed mega dairy farm in Adams County has cleared a major hurdle.
The 4,200-cow Richfield Dairy was awarded a DNR permit for a high-capacity well and wastewater discharge.
Wisconsin Ag Connection reports the agency took more time to study the environmental impact of the dairy after a scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point came forward with concerns about how the operation will impact local water levels. His research shows that the farm will likely draw down its aquifer by nearly 11-percent.
The DNR granted the permits, but will require the farm to install groundwater monitoring wells, a leak detection system and keep thorough records on manure application and process wastewater.
