LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS; FEWER JOBS STATEWIDE

This month’s snapshot of local unemployment rates provides a mixed bag.
The news was good for Clark County, which saw its jobless rate plummet from 7.7% in August to 6.9% in September; consequently, the county’s ranking dropped from 33rd highest to 42nd highest.
Clark County’s rank is now well below the statewide average of 7.8%.
Elsewhere in the region, Wood County saw the exact same movement as the jobless rate there dropped from 7.7% in August to 6.9% in September; Marathon County rate moved from 7.4% down to 7%; Jackson County’s rate improved two-tenths of a percent to 7.5% and Eau Claire County’s rate dropped from 6.5% to 6%.
But, in a separate statewide report last week, the Department of Workforce Development reported that the entire state lost a net 900 private-sector jobs in September, the third consecutive month of private-sector jobs losses.
Employment at government agencies and public schools, meanwhile, registered its deepest drop in decades last month.
