AREA MAN HELPS DECIDE FATE OF FLORENCE CO. SCHOOL

A state board has voted to keep a countywide public school district in northeastern Wisconsin operating after Florence County voters approved a referendum that will raise property taxes to help cover school costs.

Neillsville school board president Walter Wetzel serves on seven-member board that issued the ruling Tuesday.

The referendum vote last week adds $4.75 million for school operations in the next five years. Voters rejected similar referendums twice earlier in the year, and the School Board then voted to dissolve the district rather than cut deeper into school programs. The vote to dissolve the district resulted in the matter going before the state appeals board. The district has about 600 students.
