GREENWOOD (FINALLY) ON LETTERMAN!

The good folks of Greenwood can get back to their normal bedtimes: Their segment on The Late Show With David Letterman finally aired last night.

The three-minute clip was part of a recurring segment called Biff Henderson’s America.

Henderson is a stage manager and frequent contributor to the long-running late night show. He visited Greenwood in late April. Producers thought the segment would air in May, but it kept getting pushed back, but finally aired Tuesday night.

Mayor Jim Schecklman said the bit was well-done. While some had feared the show would paint its residents in a poor light, it came across as Biff laughing with folks, instead of laughing at them.

"I was pleased with it," Schecklman says. "The hard part is you know they were here filming for two days and they have to cut a lot of it to get it to a three-minute segment."

"Unfortunately, a lot of stuff didn't get put in the piece that may have been funny, but overall, I think it was a good clip.

In one memorable scene, Henderson gets a tour of Grassland Dairy with plant manager Kevin Lucas.

"Is there anything you'd like to say to the lactose intolerant," Henderson asks.

"Oh, well... Just keep eating dairy and you'll get over it," Lucas jokes.

There’s an old saying that “no publicity is bad publicity,” and Schecklman hopes the nationally-televised segment might bring a few more people into town.

As for Greenwood residents, many have been groggy for the past several months as they stayed up late not wanting to miss their 15 minutes of fame. Schecklman has been recording the show every night. Now, he says, people can finally “get some shuteye.”
