Military leaders at Camp Shelby in Mississippi are preparing to send off two battalions of Wisconsin National Guard soldiers – including many from our area.

About one-thousand Wisconsin soldiers in two units are in the final stages of an intensive training program at the National Guard base south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Their regimen has included working with Arabic role-players in a mock-up Middle Eastern city lined with razor wire and checkpoints.

Wisconsin National Guard spokeperson Lieutenant Colonel Tim Donovan says eight legislators and others will travel to the base this weekend for a brief ceremony.

The Wisconsin units will deploy to the Iraqi theater but their specific destination and mission have not been disclosed.

A ceremony is planned Saturday for the Wisconsin Rapids-based First Battalion, 120th Field Artillery. The Madison-based Second Battalion, 128th Infantry will ship out after a similar ceremony next week.
