It was a decent year for the state’s maple syrup producers.

According to Wisconsin Ag Connection, maple syrup production rose back to normal levels this spring, after a terrible year in 2010.

State agriculture officials say 155,000 gallons of maple syrup was made between February and May--a 32-percent increase from the 117,000 gallons boiled down in 2010. Sugar content of sap was about same as last year, requiring 38 gallons of sap for one gallon of syrup. But tap numbers increased from 650,000 last year to 660,000 in 2011. Yields were also up 31-percent.

This year’s season was about eight days longer than in 2010. It started on February 2, one day later than last year, and closed on May 7. Last year, the season ended on April 16.
