D.A. TRYING TO KEEP FINE $$ IN THE COUNTY

Faced with cuts in state funding, an area county’s District Attorney is trying to get more money from the violators of traffic laws.

Jackson County District Attorney Gerald Fox wants to make sure the county—not the state—gets more money from State Patrol-issued tickets.

But, the plan might not be legal and could lead to court battles.

According to WEAU-TV, Fox estimates the county could earn $300,000 more per year if they charge people with county ordinance violations, not state statute violations.

Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg tells us Fox’s plan might be an “OK idea.” He says he already attempts to use county ordinances instead of state statutes, when possible, to keep more fines in the county, but he will be interested to see if Jackson County has success in turning State Patrol-issued citations in county ordinance violations.
