ANALYSIS: WALKER EQUALS $1.68M LESS IN EDUCATION FUNDING

DPI and Legislative Fiscal Bureau estimates show Gov. Scott Walker's proposed budget would mean $1.68 billion less for schools over the next two years than under current state law.

Wispolitics.com reports that, under current law, districts would expect an increase in the limit of $275 per student in 2011-12 and another $280.50 in 2012-13.

The governor has proposed reducing the per-pupil spending limit by 5.5 percent in the first year and then freezing it at that reduced level in the second. Walker’s spokesman Cullen Werwie notes the estimates don't account for the $976 million in projected the savings districts could realize with end of most collective bargaining rights.
