8 GAME FOOTBALL SCHEDULE FOR 2012
Thursday, January 27th, 2011 -- 10:30 am
Posted by Larry Hoeser, Sports Director

The WIAA Board of Control this week approved a measure to reduce the regular season from 9 games to 8 for the 2012 high school football season. The change effects only 2012, as the 2011 season will remain a 9-game schedule, albeit with the earlier start date approved last year. The move to an 8-game schedule came as a result of the practice start date for 2012 initially falling on August 1st, which some felt was too early to begin and could lead to issues such as heat-related problems, loss of family and summer time for coaches and players, and potentially a decrease in participation numbers. The change effects only the 2012 season, with practices now set to begin on August 6th instead of August 1st. The earliest day for practice for the 2011 season will be August 3rd. The proposal includes the option for teams not qualifying for the playoffs to schedule a ninth or even tenth game after the completion of the regular season. The WIAA will not mandate or schedule those games, although indications are that the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association will help facilitate and organize the extra contests.
