CHANGES TO RURAL ADDRESS SIGNS PROPOSED

There will be a public hearing Wednesday on a proposed county ordinance governing rural address signs.

The Clark County Planning and Zoning committee is proposing an ordinance that would bring some uniformity to the signs, which are purchased and maintained by the towns. The ordinance wouldn’t force towns to purchase new signs, but it would require them to follow some guidelines as they phase-out their old signs.

Emergency Management Director Michelle Hartness says some towns haven’t changed their signs since they were first erected around 20 years ago. They're getting warn, and difficult to read.

Under the proposed ordinance, new signs would have to be two-sided, flag style markers, the lettering would have to meet minimum size requirements and set-back requirements.

Hartness says law enforcement and first responders around the county hope the ordinance is amended to also require the signs be blue and feature the street name AND township name.

Hartness says the markers cost about $16 to $18 a piece, plus a rather sizable shipping charge.

The public hearing will be from 11 to 2 p.m. in the Courthouse Auditorium.
