Authorities in Jackson County say a 50-year-old man killed himself after shooting two deputies Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies went to check on 50-year-old Michael Wenkle at his home southwest of Black River Falls. He didn’t answer the door, but spoke to the three deputies through the closed door, refusing to cooperate.

That’s when, without warning, Wenkle fired a shot at the deputies through the closed door, hitting Deputy Scott Bluedorn. Bluedorn was able to retreat, along with the other two deputies. Sgt. Douglas Utter was injured in the process, possibly be shrapnel. T

Authorities eventually deployed gas into the building. They found Wenkle dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The injured deputies are expected to recover.
