HIGH GAS PRICES COULD LEAD TO LESS SCHOOL TRIPS, COOLER CLASSROOMS

High gas and heating fuel prices will likely have a “chilling” impact on area schools - literally. Interim Greenwood superintendent Marcia Hochalter says she’s built in a 25-percent increase for transportation and heating costs for the upcoming budget, but the district will still explore “fuel conservation strategies” at a meeting next Wednesday night.
"We're going to look at all the curricular-related field trips. We'll reprioritize those and determine which are really essential," Hochalter explains.
Aside from a possible reduction of field trips, students and teachers may be asked to deal with slightly cooler classroom temperatures this winter.
"We're going to look at the thermostat control and see if we can reduce those. And we'll make sure kids are wearing the appropriate clothing and sweaters, so if we do lower the heat, they are prepared."
The district’s annual meeting will be held on Monday, September 19th. Hochalter expects to take some time to explain the proposed transportation and heating increases.
