TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING MEAL COST A GOOD DEAL FOR FAMILIES

The Wisconsin Farm Bureau says the average price for a classic, home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner is still a better deal than many fast food value meals. The Wisconsin Farm Bureau’s annual price survey of the traditional items of turkey, stuffing, cranberries and pumpkin pie for a family of 10 came in at $45.26 this year. This year marks the first time items found on the informal Wisconsin survey mirror that of the American Farm Bureau Federation’s national Thanksgiving survey. The shopping
list for the surveys included turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray of carrots and celery, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and beverages of milk and coffee, all in quantities sufficient to serve a family of 10. The biggest price difference between the two surveys was due to the increased cost for turkey. Wisconsin’s average price for a 16-pound turkey averaged $20.16, which is $2.50 higher than the $17.66 national average. Based on that item alone, the cost of the Wisconsin Thanksgiving meal came in higher than the national average.
