SCHOOL LEVIES UP STATEWIDE, LOCALLY

We’ve been telling you property taxes are on the way up around the state, and now we have some more proof.
The State Department of Public Instruction has published budget data for all the school districts’ in Wisconsin. It shows school district levies increased 3.4% in the past year and the average mill rate has jumped 6.3%.
The numbers locally are a bit more drastic.
Granton taxpayers will be hardest hit this year. The levy for the 2010-11 school year jumped 20.8% and the tax rate jumped 25% from $10 last year to $12.51 this year. Granton’s mill rate is the 26th highest in the state, in part due to the lack of property value there. Granton has the 5th lowest property value of any K-12 district in Wisconsin.
Greenwood’s levy is up 3% and the mill rate is up 7.7% to $11.14. Neillsville’s levy is up 5.7% and the mill rate is up 8.15% to $8.22. Loyal’s levy is up 11.7% and the mill rate is up 14.7% to $7.41.
Things could be worse. Taxpayers in the Elmwood School District, west of Eau Claire, will pay $16.57 per thousand dollars of property for their K-12 facility.
Tax bills will be out in December. The school district levy is just one portion of the bill, which also helps fund the county, municipality and technical college.
