SCHAFFER BACK IN COURT

The Neillsville man named a “primary suspect” in an unsolved double-homicide was back in court Wednesday.

37-year old Larry Schaffer is currently being held on 3rd-degree sexual assault charges for an incident that reportedly occurred in 2001.

Schaffer was in court to plead no contest to the sexual assault charge, but he rescinded his plea after a judge explained prosecutors would have to prove his guilt. That sets the stage for a trial set to begin September 15th in Sparta. Under the plea agreement, Schaffer would have been recommended for a 33-month prison term, with credit for 96 days served, and four years extended supervision.

In early June, District Attorney Dan Cary identified Schaffer, along with the late Troy Hogan of Sparta, as "primary suspects" in the deaths of Kale Kvistad II and Connie DeGeorge. Both had been shot in the head in what investigators said might have been a drug-related killing. No charges have been filed in the slayings.

Hogan was found drown to death earlier this summer; his death was deemed an accident.
