KATRINA COULD IMPACT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS

Hurricane Katrina may have an unexpected impact on Wisconsin residents planning to travel abroad.

Clark County Clerk of Court Gail Walker says Wisconsin residents who apply for passports supply local offices with information. From there, the information is sent to a “lock-box” in Pittsburgh, and then on to a passport agency in New Orleans.

The agency is closed due to Hurricane Katrina. That could spell delays.

"If you've applied to get a passport before August 25th and you're traveling within the next four weeks, you have to call to check on the status of your passport," Walker says.

It usually takes about six weeks for applicants to get their passport, and that could be even longer now.

"I'm sure they'll correct anything they can. If you're not traveling until sometime next year, you don't have to call. You'll get your passport, it just might take a little bit longer."

The toll-free number is 1(877) 487-2778. Walker says there are about 15 Clark County passport applications that may be effected.
