LOYAL REFERENDUM NEARS

Residents of the Loyal School district will have a big decision to make in less than two weeks, and some new information might impact the vote.

On November 2nd, they’ll be asked to allow the district to exceed the state-imposed revenue cap by $697,000 each year, for the next four years. If the referendum isn’t approved, school board members say they’ll be forced to make draconian cuts—including all sports programs—that may wind up pushing parents to open enroll their kids to other districts.

Like most districts in the area, Loyal learned last week their property valuation actually dipped almost 3%. At $7.41 per thousand, Loyal currently has one of the lowest tax rates in the area. But, while officials had predicted the referendum, if approved, would push taxes from $7.41 to $11.35 per thousand dollars of property in its first year, the decreased property value means the rate could go as high as $12.03.

This week’s TRG reports about 30 people attended an information meeting Monday night—the last such meeting planned before the November 2nd vote.
