The sexual assault trial for the Neillsville man called a "primary suspect" in the 2002 murder of a Sparta couple could begin in a few weeks.

A hearing next Wednesday will determine if the case against 37-year old Larry Schaffer will go to a jury trial. That trial would begin Sept. 15. Schaffer was arrested in Neillsville back in May. He was charged with third-degree sexual assault for an incident in 2001.

Around that time, authorities said he and Troy Hogan of Sparta were primary suspects in the 2002 deaths of Kale Kvistad and Connie DeGeorge. Since that announcement, Troy Hogan died as the result of an accidental drowning.
