An area county has a big budget hole to plug.

The Jackson County Chronicle reports it now faces an almost $1 million budget shortfall.

Almost of all of that--$900,000—can be attributed to an anticipated deficit from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The paper reports the county’s experienced increased placements in their child welfare programs. Each placement can cost the county between $215 to $9,000 per month.

Those services are state-mandated and cannot be cut.
