July was another relatively safe month on Wisconsin roads.

With a total of 49 fatalities in 47 Wisconsin traffic crashes, last month was tied with July 1946 for the second safest month of July in terms of traffic deaths since World War II. The safest month of July since World War II occurred last year with 46 traffic deaths, and the deadliest July occurred in both 1966 and 1971, with 140 fatalities.

Although traffic fatalities in July were three more than in July 2009, they also were 22 fewer than the five-year average for the month of July.

As of July 31, a total of 303 people have died in Wisconsin traffic crashes during 2010, including 57 motorcycle drivers, five motorcycle passengers, 24 pedestrians and four bicyclists. Traffic deaths through July were six more than during the same period in 2009 and 72 fewer than the five-year average.
