MEIER DROPS APPEAL

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

A man convicted of felony-murder has decided not to appeal his conviction.

In a letter dated July 31 and addressed to Wood County Judge James Mason, Tyler Meier says he’s caused “enough damage both physically, mentally and financially” and will drop his appeal.

Meier pleaded guilty to the charge, admitting he punched a man at the Brickyard Bar and Restaurant last year. The man hit his head on the floor and died as a result of his injuries.

While he told the court he was pleading guilty because it was the right thing to do, he became agitated after Judge Mason sentenced him to five years in prison. He filed an appeal and sought an attorney to represent him, but the State’s Public Defender’s office determined he wasn’t eligible for legal counsel. Judge Mason recently appointed an attorney, but told Meier he’d have to pay $50 a month to Clark County.

In his most recent letter, Meier says his “poor wife and kids would front the bill” and he didn’t want to “subject them to my consequences any longer.”

Meier states his decision to rescind his request for post conviction relief was final, and he will “make no more explanation or excuses.”
