A Jackson County man is accused of starving his dairy cows.

Ronald Nelson of Melrose was charged Wednesday with 46 misdemeanor counts of failure to provide proper food and drink to confined animals.

According to WEAU-TV, the animal control officer reported the possible neglect on the Nelson farm in February. There were several dead cows, and several malnourished and sick cattle at the farm.

Investigators say the bank was in the process of foreclosing on the cattle. If convicted, he faces a $10,000 fine and nine months behind bars for each count
