MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCTION DOWN

Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

Wisconsin's maple syrup production this spring totaled about 117,000 gallons-- 41 percent below last year's record output of 200,000 gallons.

According to Wisconsin Ag Connection, the state's agriculture department reports that sugar content of the sap was up slightly from last year, requiring 38 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of maple syrup. Over 500 maple producers reported their production and price information in April and May, in which they received $36.70 per gallon for their 2009 production, $2.40 less than a year earlier.

This year's season averaged 20 days for the various producers who responded to surveys. That's about seven days shorter than last year. About 87 percent of the producers felt that temperatures this season were too warm for sap flow.
