AREA SCHOOLS RUNNING LATE ON TEACHER CONTRACTS

In theory, state public schools were supposed to have their teachers’ contracts hammered out by last July, but three of our four area districts still don’t have a deal.

Neillsville’s board reached an agreement with its teachers’ union last spring. It features a 3.8% total package increase for the 2009-2010 school year, and a 3.9% increase for 2010-2011.

Granton, Loyal and Greenwood haven’t been able to reach an agreement. That means teachers have been working under their old contract since July.

While Granton’s board and union are still negotiating, the unions in Loyal and Greenwood have filed for arbitration.

Greenwood superintendent Dr. David Westhoff tells us there has been a potential breakthrough with their union, and they’re still hoping arbitration can be avoided.

These are the first contracts school district have handled since the state lifted the QEO.
