SAME-SEX PARTNERSHIPS NOT CATCHING ON LOCALLY

After an initial surge when the law went into effect last year, the registration rate of same-sex domestic partnerships slowed. More than 1,300 same-sex couples signed up for the state's new domestic partnership registry in the last five months of 2009.

That total amounts to 9% of the marriages declared over the same period, or one domestic partnership for every 11 marriages. The registry has survived an initial court challenge and likely will face more political or legal fights over the next year.

Elsewhere around the state, the figures for 2009 vary widely. In liberal Dane County, there was one domestic partnership for every three new marriages between August and December, but in seven rural counties not a single couple stepped up and received the benefit.

Clark County has only one registered same-sex couple.
