The entire community of Fairchild is in mourning after learning a hometown soldier was killed in Iraq this weekend. 20-year-old specialist Charles Kaufman was killed after an improvised explosive device exploded near his Humvee on Sunday.

Kaufman’s family is preparing for their second funeral after Charles’ grandfather – and namesake – passed away last week.

Kaufman served in Charlie Company of the First Battalion, 128th Infantry.

Flags have been lowered in Fairchild, a community of about 500 southeast of Eau Claire.
