LOCAL AGENCIES SCORE GRANT MONEY

More than 350 local emergency response agencies have been awarded a total of $4.2-million in federal funding to purchase nearly 3,600 new radios with enhanced mutual aid channel capacity.

Shared “mutual aid” channels enable reliable communications between several emergency response agencies at critical times—like large-scale disasters, and incidents that cross jurisdictional lines.

These grants come from the Homeland Security fund.

In our area, the Village of Dorchester Fire Department was awarded $17,000; the Greenwood Police Department was awarded $4,952; the City of Owen Police Department was awarded $5,170 and the Thorp Fire Department was awarded $23,000.

The grants are part of a statewide strategy referred to as ‘inoperability.’ When complete, aging communications systems will be replaced and new equipment that will interface with the WISCOM backbone increasing local capacity and statewide interoperability.
