HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT GETTING READY
Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 -- 11:31 am
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

With a Winter Storm Warning in effect, the Clark County Highway Department is busy getting ready.

"We're loading everything up with salt and sand. For the most part, just getting ready for the big storm," says Highway Commissioner Randy Anderson.

Crews are responsible for about 300 miles of county, and 200 miles of state roads. They have about 22 plows.

When will they be out? That depends on the storm.

"We'll probably run the secondary roads until midnight, and then get off the roads until about 4 a.m. tomorrow morning," Anderson explains. "Now, (State Highway) 29, we might have to run all night."

And, while they have some powerful machinery, it’s not safe for crews to be out during whiteout conditions; Anderson urges would-be motorists to rethink travel plans if conditions deteriorate.
