It’s always exciting, the first snowstorm of the year.

Meteorologist Mike Welvaert says it should drop between 6”-10” of snow over much of our listening area, with heavier amounts the farther south you go.

"It's going to track from Missouri into the Great Lakes area. We're expecting snow to break out in the afternoon hours Tuesday, and continue throughout the day on Wednesday," says Welvaert.

But wait… that’s not all.

"As we get behind the storm, quite a bit of wind and cold, as well. We could see some significant blowing and drifting," he warns.

In fact, we can expect north winds of over 20 mph on Wednesday, and by Thursday, high temperatures will struggle to make it out of the single digits.

We’re currently under a Winter Storm Watch for Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening, but Welvaert believes that will be upgraded to a warning later this afternoon.

"We'll see wind chills well below zero, so winter has arrived."

Things could be worse: the southern part of the state already has a couple of inches of snow on the ground.
