GRANTON KIDS EXPERIENCE DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

For the 6th year in a row, Granton elementary students are experiencing democracy in action.

Each fall, students vote in a mock election, but first they sit through a debate. That debate was held Tuesday.

This year, kids have to choose their favorite sport – the choice is football or baseball.

Superintendent Arnie Snook represented baseball. He reminded kids the sport is the ‘Great American Past Time’. He also sounded the populous message that baseball is a sport that young and old, short and tall and male and female can play.

Plus, he said, baseball has the better music, leading the students in a rousing rendition of Take Me Out To The Ball Game.

But, 4-K teacher Ron Klein said baseball might be a good ‘past’ time, but football was the ‘now’ time. He noted it consistently clobbers baseball in the ratings. Besides, he said, baseball is just plain old boring.

"There's a pitch, and then you wait, and you wait and you wait," Klein said. "Why do you need a 7th Inning Stretch? You usually stretch when you're tired. That's why you need a 7th Inning Stretch, because you've been sitting for so long."

The students will have to endure another week of campaigning, then they’ll get to vote between the two choices next Tuesday.
