AREA SCHOOLS TALKING SPORTS CO-OPS

The local high school sports landscape could look a lot different in a few years as area schools begin to explore cooperative opportunities.

The school boards in Greenwood, Granton, Loyal and Neillsville are all discussing merging sports programs.

Area schools have suffered from declining enrollments and shrinking state funding for a number of years. Athletic programs have suffered as a result.

Last year, the Granton girls basketball team played several games with only five players.

This year’s Greenwood football team has only 25 players, and most are freshman or sophomores. They’ve been outscored 288-36 this year, and are 0-8.

Granton formally contacted Greenwood about potential cooperation. Loyal has entered the discussion, and Neillsville will also discuss the issue during a meeting next week.

Greenwood’s school board will hold a public forum on the topic on November 2nd at 7 p.m.
