DEER DONATION PROGRAM TURNS 10

Wisconsin's deer donation program is celebrating a milestone anniversary.

This hunting season marks the 10th year of hunters donating deer that are processed into ground venison and given to needy families.

The Department of Natural Resources established the program in 2000 to encourage hunters to shoot more antlerless deer, primarily does, as a way to check the growth of an overpopulated herd. The thinking was hunters wouldn't shoot extra deer unless they needed them for food or they had someone to give them to.

Since then, the DNR says hunters have donated nearly 70,000 deer that have been processed into 3.1 million pounds of ground venison that was distributed to food pantries across the state.
