NEW 4-H FOOD STAND NEARS COMPLETION

With the Clark County Fair just around the corner, workers are busy finishing the new 4-H Food Stand.

The food stand is always a hot spot on the grounds, but the 25-year-old facility was showing its age.

"The building was actually raising every year. We'd come back in the Spring and the building was lifting off the ground," says Peggy Erickson, "so we had problems with our pipes. It was just getting to be too crowded and pretty inconvenient."

The 4-H worked out a deal with the Men’s Club: they bartered their old building to them, in exchange for volunteer labor.

The new building is nearly complete. It’s in the same familiar location, right in the heart of the animal and forage exhibits, but will be a big improvement.

"We've doubled our space. When we get all our fixtures in, they should be much more convenient," she says.

The food stand offers invaluable experience for the 4-H clubs that man it throughout the fair, Erickson notes.

The new building will also allow the Home and Community Education group to move their popular Dairy Bar out of the Exhibition building by the Grandstand, to the 4-H building.

"The main reason was because the facilities down there weren't the greatest. The floor was very uneven, birds flying in and out. It was just a matter of time before an inspector came in and shut us down. We had to do something," explains Arlene Stark with HCE.

Joanne Knack with HCE says they hope the move will be mutually beneficial.

"We've tried to do a lot of things. We do scholarships for people going into college. That's really our big aim, and that's what we raise most of our money for," she says.

The Clark County Fair will be held August 5th through the 9th.
