LOCAL SOLDIER: AFGHANIS NOT MUCH DIFFERENT

A Neillsville man serving in Afghanistan says most people there aren’t that different than here.

"We've not had any difficulties adapting to the culture," says Capt. Brian Barth, Commander of the 951st Sapper Company based in Rhinelander and Tomahawk.

The troops received "a lot of training" on the Afghani people. They learned everything from their beliefs to their diet. "Americans have a varied culture, Afghanistan has their culture," he says.

Barth’s Company has been working with coalition forces, but also with the Afghan National Army.

"After working with them, you see that 90-percent of the people over here are just like Americans," Barth notes. "They want to have an income, they want to have a family, they want to have a safe place to live."

Their work with Afghan forces ranks among the 951st’s proudest accomplishments, Barth says.
