TEMPORARY FEE INCREASES BECOMING PERMANENT

The Legislature's budget-writing committee has decided to make permanent higher fees for vital records that were supposed to end next year.

The committee voted Thursday to go along with Gov. Jim Doyle's proposal to make the fees permanent. The higher fees went into effect two years ago and were supposed to end July 1, 2010.

The fees are charged for copies of birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates.
All 12 Democrats on the panel voted for the change and all four Republicans opposed it.
The committee rejected a Doyle proposal to increase the birth certificate fee by $2 from $20 to $22.

Once the committee finishes its work, the budget must pass the full Legislature and be signed by Doyle to become law.
