GRANTON TURNS TO 'VIRTUAL' CLASSES

--Students in Granton will likely soon be able to take a variety of classes over the internet. On Monday night, the school board will likely take a step toward adopting a policy section regarding “virtual” education and also approve student requests to take summer school courses on-line.

"We are offering some courses that are put together through the University of Wisconsin-Madsion," Superintendent Jerry Nelson says. "They're courses that will allow our students to pick up some credit - if they're credit deficient - or to take some courses for advanced placement."

The district will pay about $340 per advanced placement class and $25 for the credit-deficiency classes ; that’s significantly less than it would cost to staff a class.

"They can access some of these classes from home," Nelson explains, "However, we're encouraging most of this be done here in school. Any test will be monitored here by our staff."

And there’s literally a catalogue full of potential on-line course offerings. Math, language arts, history, science are covered, Nelson says.

The virtual courses are virtually instructor-free, though some supervision is necessary to help the student through the process.
