LOYAL BOARD BEGINS LIFE AFTER REFERENDUM
Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 -- 12:19 pm
Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The Loyal School Board will meet for the first time since a revenue cap exemption referendum failed.

The three-year, $500,000 per year referendum failed 413 to 549 back on April 7th.

Superintendent Graeme Williams says he and the board have heard several opinions as to why the question failed.

"Some of the people thought we should be considering consolidation again, the economy had an affect on how people voted; the timing was not good," Williams said.

Beginning tonight (Thursday), the board will plot a course to fix a looming budget deficit. "We predict about $240,000 (deficit). If costs stay down and don't increase as much, that will be a help," Williams says.

The district might also elect to put off some maintenance projects and adjust staffing levels, but Williams doesn’t expect major cuts to programs going into next year.

"We haven't talked about that, but maybe just reducing the number of teams we have. That would save on coaches' salaries, transportation and officials' costs," he notes, "I think we're going to try to offer, academically, the classes that we currently hvae and keep everything status quo."
