A Thorp man who allegedly broke into a home in the middle of the night, beat up the occupant before being shot in the leg made his initial appearance in Clark County Circuit Court Thursday morning.

Authorities say 26-year-old Cole Vetterkind was wearing make-up resembling The Joker from the recent Batman movie during the assault in January.

Vetterkind allegedly attacked 23-year-old Jason Benzschawel.

Still in a wheel chair, Vetterkind was ordered held on a $32,000 cash bond. Assistant District Attorney Richard Lewis requested the cash bond based on Vetterkind’s past record of violent crimes, the seriousness of the this alleged assault and death threats he allegedly made against the victim, who is dating his ex-girlfriend.

He’s charged with misdemeanor battery and felony burglary, strangulation and suffocation and intimidation of a victim.
