New details have emerged about a 20-year-old sexual assault case authorities believe they've now solved.

Detectives says a DNA analysis has linked 39-year-old Michael Buchanan of Spencer, formerly of Pittsville, to the abduction and assault of an 11-year-old girl from Wisconsin Rapids back in 1990.

He’s held on a $100,000 cash bond and charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child and child enticement.

Investigators re-interviewed the woman, now 30, in February. She was riding her bicycle when a man pulled over and asked for directions. He then retrieved a large butcher’s knife from the glove compartment and forcibly put her in the car, while holding the knife against her throat.

Investigators believe he traveled 30 minutes to his Town of Hiles home and assaulted her. He then left her in rural Cranmoor and drove off.

Buchanan will be back in court Thursday.
