YOUNG ARTIST FINALIST IN KETCHUP CONTEST

A young Pittsville art student is a finalist in a national design contest.

Heinz Ketchup asked art students from around the country to submit their designs for ketchup packets.

Kris Doering is the art instructor at Pittsville. She had her 1st through 6th grade students participate.

She found out last week that 2nd grader Colleen Lassa is one of 36 finalists selected from the 45,000 entries.

"Colleen drew a ketchup bottle swinging on a swing," Doering explains, "Heinz told me they really liked the design because it was very playful and fun, how she had the feet kicking up at the bottom of the ketchup bottle."

Lassa is one of only three 2nd graders in the contest. On-line voting will determine the winner of each grade level. Those winners will earn some nice prizes.

"Colleen will $1,000, the art department will get $1,000 in art supplies and the school will get $1,000 of ketchup," Doering notes, "Her design (would) go onto 20-million packets of ketchup."

Doering is encouraging everyone in the area to log onto www.ketchupcreativity.com. You can vote as many times as you’d like. You can vote through Wednesday. The winners will be selected by the end of the month.
