Posted by Riley Hebert-News Director

The newly released ag census shows Clark County has lost a lot of farm acreage in the past few years, but the value of their farm production has sky-rocketed.

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s 2007 Census of Agriculture shows Clark County lost about 30 farms and over 20,000 farm acres from 2002 to 2007.

It was estimated there were about 440,000 acres on 2,170 farms as of 2007.

The market value of the production on Clark County farms was estimated $279-million, up from $174-million in 2002.

With over 26,400 head, Clark County ranks 2nd in the state in the number of cows and cattle. Clark ranks 20th out of the nation’s 3,079 counties in that category.

Clark ranks first in the state in both corn for silage and oats for grain. We rank 15th and 17 nationally in those categories.
